A Splash of Colour in The Land of Fado: IOC/IAKS Award For The Aveiro Municipal Stadium.

On the 6th July 2005, the International Olympic Commitee (IOC) and two further sports organisations will assign the IOC/IAKS Award 2005. One of the recipients of the international architectural award for stadiums is the Aveiro Municipal Stadium, situated 75km south of Porto and designed by Tomás Taveira. The portuguese architect is famous for colourful building constructions where light is purposefully implemented to set off modernistic structures. The lighting solution comes from Siteco, Traunreut.

The structure of the multifunctional stadium as well as the colour spectacle brighten the stadium and lend it a certain lightness. It consists of three subterraneous storeys and three upper stories, and the height is equivalent to a 15-storey building. All 31,500 seats are covered by a 20,000m² roof construction consisting of a special, translucent plastic that lets in enough daylight to illuminate the whole stadium, and also gives the grass enough light to grow. Four giant screens at each corner of the playing field make sure that spectators are constantly informed.

The stadium is divided into two main areas. There are tribunals for the general public and a building with various functional rooms and offices. Within the context of the European Championmships, Siteco is not only equipping the Aviero Stadium with lighting solutions, but five other stadiums as well: the Estádio do Dragao/Porto, Estádio José Alvalade/Lissabon, Estádio D. Alfonso Henriques/Guimares, Estádio do Algarve/Faro and the Estádio do Bessa/Porto. R2 MAXI projectors and SiCompact A2 MIDI and MAXI floodlights create perfect viewing conditions in Aveiro.

Important requisites here were enough vertical light intensity for TV broadcasting as well as a good local uniformity within the horizontal spectrum. Despite the high levels of light intensity, glare from the Siteco floodlights is kept to a minimum. As well as 168 2000 watt floodlights and 100 SiCompact MIDI and MAXI, 700 Comfit-Plus luminaires, 3000 Monsun damp-proof luminaires and 1800 Lunis downlights were deployed. Responsible for the award are the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne and the international association of establishments for sports and leisure (IAKS) in Cologne.
