Queen Margaret University College completed their new building in 2007. Entering the main reception, you are confronted with a central, 'pod-like' office space, elevated from the ground by round pillars. Clad in planked hardwood, its finish and curvuture echo a nautical theme. The structure is set in the middle of a vast atrium space with open plan corridors to either side of the three storeys. Daylight washes the space in a soft, natural uniformity.
Siteco were given the task of emulating the natural illumination in the atrium. Our solution was the high efficiency secondary reflector system, Mirrortec. With very limited roof space to locate luminaires, this system is a natural choice, allowing light sources to be maintained at low height with minimum disruption. Exceptional beam control from the light sources, Projector 400, ensures pedestrians moving along the elevated corridors are not distracted by intense or stray upward light. They are coupled with advanced fresnel in the mirror panesl, Reflector 100, mounted at high level to distribute light uniformly, mimicking the daylight in the space. The physical shape and style of the system lends itself well to the general architectural style.
Lunis E and R were used in typical circulation areas to echo the maritime design and provide gentle halos of light onto the ceilng, highlighting the self finish concrete.
