London in a new light
The London City Hall, designed by Foster and Partners, houses the assembly chamber for the 25 elected members of the London Assembly and the offices of the Mayor and 500 staff of London`s governing body - the greater London Authority. It is a highly public building, bringing visitors into close proximity with the workings of the democratic process.
The 5,400 sq.m. piazza surrounding City Hall is illuminated from a single point - a 47-meter-high steel mast at ist south-west corner. Two huge, circular but eccentrically positioned elements contain the lighting components: a secondary reflector system consisting of 18 1,000 W projectors in the lower discus and 120 SiSTAR elements in the upper.
Lighting an area is one thing. To bathe a large urban space in pleasant, glare free light is another. The results met with the approval of the lighting consultants - the piazza and amphitheatre are now evenly lit. The 3,600 Kelvin light color and an average illumination of 30 Lux create a very warm, pleasant atmosphere.
The elegant light mast is an eye catcher, without taking on a dominant role. Pedestrians can enjoy the view in a number of directions, free from conventional masts. Surrounded by City Hall, the impressive office buildings and the Tower of London on the other side of the river, a long neglected part of London awakes in a new light.
