Movable Prism Systems

The moveable prism system is a transparent sun protection system for façades and glass roofs that prevents the ingress of the sun's heat into the interior of the building and at the same time lets through a maximum of diffuse daylight.

It consists of non-specular prismatic plates that reflect light entering from a direction vertical to the longitudinal axis of the prismatic structures according to the laws of total reflection. Diffuse daylight coming from the other directions is almost completely let through.

The blocking area of the prisms exist as a result of the prism angle of 90° and the total reflection occurring within each prism. The principle of total reflection functions only within a very narrow range, whereby a tracking of the louvre blades in their longitudinal axis according to the sun's position is necessary.

The prism blades can be laterally 'parked' away on cloudy days, allowing unhindered vision through the glazing. On cloudy days the prisms are moved into a horizontal position in order to allow a maximum of diffuse daylight to reach the building's interior.
