Balloon Luminaires

With respect to lighting, architects Herzog de Meuron and light designer Michael Schmidt have come up with a truly unusual solution: the balloon luminaire.

The entire area of the Allianz Arena, Munich, includes as few light points as possible and is illuminated from a height of approx. 20 m. Siteco developed this solution in collaboration with the planners. Nine balloon luminaires made of PTFE film are shaped by using air.

A 150W blower sucks air in and blows it into the balloon. The balloon luminaire is a premium solution for the illumination of esplanades, squares and access routes. Two devided incoming power cables are responsible for a secured working, four lamps are mounted on arms in the envelope. Here are mounted the ballasts as well and the switch cabinet for the control of the fan, in the case of a failure of the fan or less pressure in the envelope, the lamps will be switched of trough a relais it is possible to use the luminaires nearly to high frequented streets, because of the reduction from the lighting density of the enevelope to 3000 cd / m².
